The RAD Studio Cruise Survivor’s Guide
WHAT IS THE RAD STUDIO CRUISE?
The RAD Studio Cruise was formed to showcase and promote a burgeoning arts district coalescing around a two mile stretch of CSX rail line highlighting Avondale Estates, Decatur and Scottdale. This one day event gives you the opportunity to visit a variety of studios to get the behind the scenes look of what it takes to create art.
So take a break from the mainstream and come cruisin’.
It’s no fun cruising if the studios aren’t open. So mark the date in your calendar.
The 8th Annual RAD Studio Cruise will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Event hours are from 11am thru 7pm .
GET A MAP
Getting lost is a drag so GET A MAP. We know some OTP folks who treat this section of town like a different country (you know who you are), so having a map handy is a good idea. If you forget yours, most studios will have one available.
There are lot of new venues on the cruise this year. We hope that you’ll visit every single venue. This event wouldn’t be very much fun for the studio artists without your participation. Your energy gives us that extra shot of adrenalin that keeps us running through this long day.
For the smartphone aware, we have a Google Maps version.
FIGURE OUT A SCHEDULE
While the event starts at 11:00 pm, each individual studio sets their activities during the event. If they have shared their activity schedule, we’ll post in on the RAD website here. Most studios will have some sort of demo, some will have some sort of cruiser participation activity, while others will have exhibits. In general there will be some sort of art related activity at each event location.
PLOT A COURSE
With your map and schedule in hand you’ll need to plot a course. Keep in mind that this is studio cruise and not a studio walk. Studios may be some distance from each other with busy E. Ponce de Leon and E. College dividing the zones.
Parking may be limited at each venue so there may be a little bit of walking through the neighborhood but it’ll be so worth the effort. Your handy dandy map has indicated some parking areas in the City of Avondale Estates. Wear comfy shoes. Weather may be a little iffy at this time of year so come prepared.
We have Trolleys!!!! And they are FREE for your riding pleasure. They make the circuit from one studio to another and will help you save some miles on your shoes. You can hop on a trolley at any location. Trolleys will make stops every 20 to 30 minutes. Trolley docents will ride along to assist cruisers and provide information about the tour. Refer to our map and look for the RAD Trolley Stop signs! The last trolley will start it’s run at 7:00 pm so keep that in mind if you would like to get back to your car.
This year, we have a lot of food providers scattered around the route. For a list and location, visit the RAD website here.
While cruisin’ around, take the time to visit some of OUR SPONSORS and show them some love! They help to defray some of the production costs of the RAD Studio Cruise and without them, we wouldn’t get the opportunity to show you what we are working on in our studios.
Remember to have fun. Ask questions. We promise that we won’t bite (much 🙂 ).
You can walk around, chat with artists, follow the beat of a different drummer, listen to music, find a gift, learn how to build a boat, watch glassblowing, watch a raku firing at the pottery studio and much more in a single Saturday afternoon. If you are attending, share this event with your friends on Facebook with the following EVENT INVITATION and come as a group.
