An Atlanta Glassblowing Experience

The RAD Studio Cruise Survivor’s Guide

WHAT IS THE RAD STUDIO CRUISE?

The RAD Studio Cruise was formed to showcase and promote a burgeoning arts district coalescing around a two mile stretch of CSX rail line highlighting Avondale Estates, Decatur and Scottdale.  This one day event gives you the opportunity to visit a variety of  studios to get the behind the scenes look of what it takes to create art.

So take a break from the mainstream and come cruisin’.

WHEN

Saturday 15

It’s no fun cruising if the studios aren’t open.  So mark the date in your calendar.

The 7th Annual RAD Studio Cruise will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014. Event hours are from 12pm thru 8pm .  This year, we are proud to be hosting the Root City Market Spring Pop Up.  The market hours will be from 12pm-4pm and will be at

GET A MAP

Map IconGetting lost is a drag so GET A MAP. We know some OTP folks who treat this section of town like a different country (you know who you are), so having a map handy is a good idea. If you forget yours, most studios will have one available.

There are lot of new venues on the cruise this year. We hope that you’ll visit every single venue. This event wouldn’t be very much fun for the studio artists without your participation. Your energy gives us that extra shot of adrenalin that keeps us running through this long day.

For the smartphone aware, we have a Google Maps version.

FIGURE OUT A SCHEDULE

Clock IconWhile the event starts at 12:00 pm, each individual studio sets their activities during the event. If they have shared their activity schedule, we’ll post in on the RAD website here. Most studios will have some sort of demo, some will have some sort of cruiser participation activity, while others will have exhibits. In general there will be some sort of art related activity at each event location.

PLOT A COURSE

Course IconWith your map and schedule in hand you’ll need to plot a course. Keep in mind that this is studio cruise and not a studio walk. Studios may be some distance from each other with busy E. Ponce de Leon and E. College dividing the zones.

Parking may be limited at each venue so there may be a little bit of walking through the neighborhood but it’ll be so worth the effort. Your handy dandy map has indicated some parking areas in the City of Avondale Estates.  Wear comfy shoes. Weather may be a little iffy at this time of year so come prepared.

TROLLEYS

Trolley IconThis year we have something new!  We have Trolleys!!!!  And they are FREE for your riding pleasure.  They make the circuit from one studio to another and will help you save some miles on your shoes.  If you are coming to the RAD Studio Cruise via MARTA Rail, there will be a trolley stop at the Avondale MARTA station at Sycamore and E. Ponce de Leon.  You can hop on a trolley at any location. Trolleys will make stops every 20 to 30 minutes. Trolley docents will ride along to assist cruisers and provide information about the tour. Refer to our map and look for the RAD Trolley Stop signs!  The last trolley will start it’s run at 7:00 pm so keep that in mind if you would like to get back to your car.

FOOD

mealWhile a lot of venues will have some some sort of refreshment, it’s a good idea to know where the food places are located. In this area of town there are a lot places to grab a bite to eat.  Here is a quick list of places which is by no means comprehensive; Sweet ‘n Sinful, Pine Street Market, Pallookaville, Kimball House, Avondale Pizza Cafe, Our Way Cafe, Coyote’s, Skip’s Hot Dog’s, Good Karma,  Urban Grounds, Southern Sweets,  Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market,  Savage Pizza.

SPONSORS

While cruisin’ around, take the time to visit some of OUR SPONSORS and show them some love!  They help to defray some of the production costs of the RAD Studio Cruise and without them, we wouldn’t get the opportunity to show you what we are working on in our studios.

HAVE FUN

Remember to have fun.  Ask questions. We promise that we won’t bite (much :-) ).

You can walk around, chat with artists, follow the beat of a different drummer, listen to music, find a gift, learn how to build a boat, watch glassblowing, watch a raku firing at the pottery studio  and much more in a single Saturday afternoon. If you are attending, share this event with your friends on Facebook with the following EVENT INVITATION and come as a group.
